The superb sandy beaches of St Jean de Luz, and Ciboure are protected from the Atlantic waves by a harbour wall, which makes them the best for swimming.
Bidart has several beaches as does Guthary and Hendaye open to the sea and popular for surfing. Milady beach is situated a mile north of Bidart towards Biarritz, it is very pleasant and less crowded than Biarritz with free parking. Further up the coast in between Biarritz and Bayonne is the long beach of Anglet.
Surfing schools exist on the beaches Biarritz, Bidart, Guthary, and Anglet and are very popular with this area The Coste Basque is the number one surf capital of Europe.

Diving and Sailing schools are available from Ciboure and Biarritz.
Mountain walks and hikes are abundant here. Along the path ways and walking trails are many villages waiting for you to discover their history, mythology and traditions. We are particularly close to the GR10 route, also walking and hiking trails across the Pyrenees and the Route de Santiago de Compostella and Pass du Roland.
Cycling and Mountain biking are extremely popular here both recreational and competitive. Well known routes include route Col d Ibardin.
Skiing Our nearest ski resort is Pierre st Martin or Cauterets, both are about a two hour drive.
Golf Courses are numerous and of a really high quality, The golfing tradition started in Biarritz in 1888 with the building of the Biarritz La Phare Today there are twelve top golf courses to enjoy in the immediate area. However the Aquitaine region (64) has no less than 60 top golf courses to choose from.
Local courses are Golf de Chantaco, Golf de La Nivelle, Golf d Epherra, Golf Fontarrabie, Golf de Biarritz Le Phare, Golf de Chiberta and Golf d Ilbarritz.
Pony Trekking into the Pyrenees Mountains is available from a local riding school and they can arrange for mornings or day treks in and around the Pyrenees.

There is a Gastronomic cuisine route of 125K through the picturesque Basque villages each specialising in traditional cheeses, peppers, wine, and chocolate. and Gateaux Basque. The route passes through Les Aldudes, Banca, St-Etienne De Biagorry, Helette, Larressore, Sare, Urrugne, Ciboure, St Jean de Luz, Guethary, Bidart, Biarritz, Anglet and Bayonne.
Bird watchers in this area are surprised by the variety of birds that can be easily seen here such as Eurasian buzzard, Egyptian bearded and Griffon Vultures, Eagle owl, Goshawk and Golden Eagle, Red kite, Peregrine Falcon
Artists, writers and photographers will have much to inspire them with the stunning scenery and the magical atmosphere to absorb.
Food: There are three gastronomic guides for France and all agree that the pays Basque region is one of the best regions in France for good food.
Traditional Basque cuisine is well seasoned with the red peppers of Espelette. Because of the fresh fish in the region it is also a speciality on the menu especially in ports such as St Jean de Luz, Thon (tuna) is delicious as well as Chipirons a variety of small squid eaten stuffed (farcies) or casseroled, oysters and mussels are also a popular dish.
Other Basque dishes worth trying are piperade, an omelette with pimento and tomatoes, Poulet Basquaise chicken with tomatoes, ham, sweet peppers and mushrooms. Loukinkos, small garlic sausages, Grasse-double, tripe cooked with red peppers and naturally the Jambon Bayonne. The most famous dessert in the region is Gateau Basque, filled with cherries.
Cheese lovers will enjoy the Brebis a delicious ewes milk cheese served in thin slices with cerese noir (black cherries)
